POKOTABI / PLACES WORTH A DETOUR
天神堂
Tenjindo’s signature grilled mochi pairs a fragrant, lightly toasted crust with sweet anko. Enjoy it just outside the east gate of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The thin mochi crust is browned on the outside, with plenty of anko inside. Tenjindo’s grilled mochi is a satisfying choice when you want to enjoy the fragrance of toasted mochi alongside the sweetness of anko. Diners have remarked on the crisp texture of the surface and the toasty aroma of the crust.
Some find the anko’s sweetness refined and restrained; others describe it as distinctly sweet. Pair it with tea and take your time over the combination of filling and mochi. It makes a snack after visiting the shrine, and some diners have said they felt tempted to reach for another. It is also a popular choice to eat on the go or take away.
Tenjindo is just outside the east gate of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and is open daily from 9 to 16. Consider stopping by earlier in the day if you have grilled mochi in mind.
